We don’t need to learn anything about women’s safety from BJP: Abhishek Banerjee | Kolkata News

TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee on Friday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for raising questions about women’s safety in West Bengal while alleging that BJP leaders were involved in incidents of torture of women.

He quoted the NCRB report declaring Kolkata as the safest city in the country. “You (Prime Minister) come to Bengal and talk big about torture of women and their safety, but you have leaders like Brij Bhushan Singh against whom wrestlers had filed sexual harassment cases.

“Modi ji has nominated Singh’s son for the Lok Sabha polls from UP…BJP has also given a ticket to the person whose son drove a car into protesting farmers, killing several of them, in Lakhimpur Kheri. And yesterday, a sister who worked at the Raj Bhavan filed a police complaint against the governor alleging sexual assault. Should we learn from these people about women’s safety?” said Banerjee.

The Trinamool Congress national secretary, while addressing a rally in Raniganj, also referred to Modi taking part in a rally in support of JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, who has been accused of sexually assaulting women.

Banerjee also criticized Modi for holding meetings with party leaders referring to “Bengalis as Rohingyas, Muslims as Pakistanis and Sikhs as Khalistanis”. “Have you noticed their language?… and Modi ji is holding election campaigns which will make these people sit next to him… those who believe in the politics of hate and division will be driven out of West Bengal,” he alleged.

Festive offer

Banerjee also urged Modi to release a “White Paper” detailing the funds allocated by the Center to West Bengal under Prime Minister Awas Yojana in the last three to four years. Banerjee said if Modi could prove that the Center has provided even a single cent to West Bengal for the scheme, he would stop campaigning for TMC candidates in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. “The central government has conspired not to release funds to the people of West Bengal. “I would urge the Prime Minister that instead of lecturing, he should release a ‘White Paper’ detailing the funds disbursed to the people of West Bengal under the Awas Yojana,” Banerjee added .
