Obituary for Lewis Ross Sutherland
Ross “Sam” Sutherland, a resident of the Dimsdale area, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2024 at the age of 74.
Ross was born on August 5, 1949 in Grande Prairie, AB. He was the youngest of twelve children born to Helen and Seath Sutherland. Ross attended school first at Wapiti School and then at Wembley and Grande Prairie. After graduating, he ventured to Calgary to begin his career in the geophysical industry. He worked as an observer with seismic crews in the Arctic and western Canada. This training led him to quality control work in industry, which saw him travel across Canada and internationally in countries such as Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Venezuela and China.
Ross also did some entrepreneurial work as a partner at Dimsdale Developments and Calympic Explorations in Alberta. He also grew grain, raised a few red waddle pigs and was currently involved in bison ranching.
Ross was involved in his community. He decided to enter politics and run for County Council. He became the proud representative of Division 4. While on the Council, he spent time on many boards, including Evergreen Park and the Phillip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum, where he worked tirelessly to see the museum’s growth. Prior to his time on the County Council, he was passionate about helping to establish and expand the Grande Prairie Stompede.
He was a long-time collector of antique Massey Harris agricultural implements and met like-minded lifelong friends along the way. In retirement, he enjoyed playing cards with his friends.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; sisters Ruth, Myret (Jack) and Anne (Gord); many nieces and nephews and their families, along with a large circle of friends.
He was predeceased by his parents Helen and Seath; five brothers: John, Max, Jim, Hugh and Brian; and two sisters Joan and Laverne.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at 2:00 PM in Clarkson Hall, (Evergreen Park).
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Phillip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum, (9301-112 Avenue, Wembley AB TOH 3S0;
