beccs shares new single, “f 0 0 d”

indie pop artist beccs has announced her upcoming EP, stay moist out on June 28. The announcement is accompanied by the release of her new single and official music video for “f 0 0 d.” The new song is an ode to the swirl of sadness, hope and uncertainty when letting go of a codependent relationship; in this case one with food. In his own unique way, the artist takes the stigmatized subject of disordered eating and treats it under the guise of a cool, structural alternative pop song. Written at a later stage in her recovery, when her eating disorder, though seemingly inactive, still fueled certain thoughts and desires, Beccs strove to see the world without the veil of her eating disorder obscuring it.

The flowing song is like water, echoing trance-like sound baths that lead to self-actualization and healing. It flows from harmonic and rhythmic twists, lush synths and sampled vocals, yet remains intimate and organic, surprising and guiding listeners into a final body of water – a space to process. Inspired by notes from oke Kaya, Portishead and Tirzah, the single stands out stay moist as the only song that the queer artist, known for her powerful vocals, produced herself.

“With relatively few, albeit growing, role models for women and non-binary producers, it took me a while to embrace my limitations and entrust this song into my own hands. What I learned with f 0 0 d is an anti-Catch 22. The more confidence I gain in myself, the more I can rely on others. I could produce as well as invite dream collaborators. In particular, passing on f 0 0 d to the visual team felt very liberating, meaningful and even circular – a letting go that the song strives for” shares beccs.

An intuitive collage of images, both intimate and grand, leads the viewer to the visual world of f 0 0 d. Scenes of isolation, unscripted movements, suggestive camera movements and cuts evoke a haunting visualization of loneliness and reckoning. Directed by Chester. In collaboration with DP Lauren Guiteras and editor Dorian Tocker, the music video ends on a note of hope, inspiring listeners to allow space to reflect, heal, and move through the pain of letting go of what’s holding them back.

Every song on this EP reflects and confronts difficult, shameful, and even ugly parts of yourself. By allowing pain and trauma to soak in like water rather than getting stuck in it, we can all “stay moist” as a way to stay honest, authentic, and radiant in our healing. Songs like “Good Comin’” and “Rage In My Veins” showcase the craft of a songwriter in her prime, taking struggles that often come with shame and adding universality with hooks that will keep listeners long after the song ends. let it hum.
