The end of a magical season for women’s tennis

Amherst, Mass-Colby Women’s tennis season 2024 came to an end today with their 1-5 loss to the Middlebury Panthers.

The doubles match was competitive, with the team losing 0–3. Sam Riordan And Michaela Landry were defeated by their opponents 4-8, the same score as Sydney Landau and Bella Suk. Amelie Gal And Ellie Gershaw were defeated 3-8 at the third doubles position.

The Mules pushed the Panthers hard in singles, with 4 of the 6 singles positions entering a third set. The most notable match was freshmen Jade Finestone she ended her season with a 6–3, 6–2 win over four singles matches. After trailing 0–4, Riordan fought back to reach a scoreline of 6–4, 4–6, 2–4 before the match was finally decided. Gershaw and Suk both lost their first sets 6-7, both dominated in their second sets and at the end of the match had just started their third set. Landau gave her opponent everything and fell 6-4, 3-6, 0-6.

Overall, the Mules had a great season as a young team, challenging teams in ways they had never experienced before. Seniors Riordan and Landau will graduate on May 26, 2024 and have a few words about how special their experience was:

“To me, this team is everything. The way we compete, together with our close friendships, has made this year the most special season. I will never forget the girls, coach, and I am so sad to give up the rackets hanging… this has been the most rewarding experience of my life” – Sam Riordan ’24

“The girls came out and gave it everything they had. They all fought not as individuals, but as a team and that’s all you can ask for. Super proud!” – Sydney Landau ’24
