FOMWAN emphasizes parental guidance during the 36th Eid’l Fitri Family Day celebration | The Guardian Nigeria News

To promote lasting marital relationships among Nigerians, the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), Lagos State Chapter, has emphasized the importance of parental guidance.

The group during the 36th Eid’l Fitri Family Day celebration, which was attended by a number of sister organizations from both Islam and Christian religions such as Women Wing of Christian Association of Nigeria (WOMICAN), Muslim Association of Visually Impaired in Nigeria ( MAVIN ), Students and others, spoke on the theme ‘Parental Guidance: Building a Collaborative Approach for Sustainable Marital Relationships’.

Speaking at the event, FOMWAN Amirah, Lagos Chapter, Alhaja Sherifat Ajagbe, said the family day celebration is an occasion to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan. “It is the group’s tradition to meet annually to renew love and sense of belonging, strengthen our bond as a family, and replenish physical and spiritual capacities. This year the emphasis is on good parenting, which is crucial in today’s society full of vices.”

Also speaking, Guest Lecturer, Registrar, Joint Admissions and Admissions Committee, Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, urged parents not to rub off their children’s paternity due to family differences. “Don’t call any child a bastard if the child isn’t one; do not deny your child the right to his or her ancestor. Good parenting requires consultation. Couples should consult each other even if one of the partners has died; his or her family should be consulted before any decision is made regarding the child’s welfare.”

Oloyede also advised parents to be good role models for their children and train them in God consciousness. ‘Make the house suitable for your children, keep them from becoming wayward, talk to them, teach them, discipline them and advise them.’

On her part, the Chairman, President Jama-at-ul Islamiyat of Nigeria, Alhaji Hashim Oyekan, who commended the efforts of women in carrying out the daily activities of the family, said: “Parenthood is deadly, may God Almighty make it easy for us. There is more to do as a parent, especially during this time.”

Chairman, Pro-Chancellor, Al-Ikmah University Kwara State, Alhaja Sekinat Yusuf, also urged mothers to educate their children in accordance with the norms of Islam, noting that the height of immorality among youths is alarming is.”

Meanwhile, the group also called for support for the organisation’s ongoing capital project, the Primary Health Care Center at Elesan Village in Eti Osa Local Council.

According to the FOMWAN Amirah, Lagos Chapter, “The construction of the primary health care center started in late 2023 and is already at an important stage, but we still have a long way to go. Undoubtedly, the current inflation has affected the prices of materials and thus the shortage of funds has taken its toll on the project. “On behalf of FOMWAN Lagos, I appreciate our fathers, mothers and everyone who contributed in cash or kind to the realization of the project. May Allah continually meet us in the points of our needs.”
