Brijesh, Aryan among seven Indians, goes to the final

Astana: Brijesh Tamta and Aryan along with five other Indian boxers participated in the final of the youth men’s category at the ASBC Asian U-22 & Youth Boxing Championships 2024 here on Friday.

To start proceedings for India, Brijesh defeated Mongolia’s Taalaibek Iasur in the 48kg category with a convincing 5-0 scoreline. After a similar series, Rahul Kundu (75kg) and Aryan (92kg) surpassed China’s Kanji Bayi Ersi and Kyrgyzstan’s Alybaev Tynystan with identical unanimous decisions.

Sagar Jakhar (60kg), on the other hand, forced a Stop the Contest (RSC) referee victory over Sadirov Dilerbek of Kyrgyzstan in the final round. Aryan (51kg), Yashwardhan Singh (63.5kg) and Priyanshu (71kg) further extended India’s winning run with split-decision verdicts.

Meanwhile, Sumit (67kg) and Sahil (80kg) signed off with bronze medals after losing 0-5 to Sabyrkhan Torekhan of Kazakhstan and Zakirov Mukhammadaziz of Kyrgyzstan. The Indian youth contingent bagged 22 medals at the prestigious tournament, including 12 in the women’s category.

Later on Friday evening, Lakshay Rathi (92+kg) and reigning world junior champions Nisha (52kg) and Akansha (70kg) will join 10 other Indian youth boxers in competing for a spot in the final. On Thursday evening, Dhruv Singh (80kg), Guddi (48kg) and Poonam (57kg) reached the last four stages of the U-22 category.

On Saturday, Preeti (54kg) and reigning youth world champion Vishvanath Suresh (48kg) will take the lead for India in the U-22 semi-finals along with 17 other boxers.

Muskan (75kg) and Alfiya Pathan (81kg) retired in their respective U-22 semi-finals.

The tournament witnessed exciting action with over 390 boxers from over 24 countries including boxing powerhouses such as China, India, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan competing for the medals in 25 weight categories.

The finals of the Youth and U-22 categories will be played on Monday and Tuesday respectively. (IANS)
