DC officer fatally shoots 2 dogs – NBC4 Washington

A D.C. police officer shot and killed two dogs last week after they escaped from their family’s Northwest yard.

The officer responded to a report of a stabbing on 11th Street in Columbia Heights on April 25, police said. After noticing a broken window, the officer went to the alley.

At the time, Jeaneva Thompson’s 16-year-old daughter, Namora, had just taken their dogs – Luna and Wednesday – outside. Police camera footage shows them fleeing the garden with a third dog.

“Sometimes they slip under the gate, and especially on Wednesdays,” Thompson said. “She used to sneak under the fence.”

The video shows the officer pulling out his gun and opening fire.

“They got out and all you heard were shots,” Thompson said. ‘They didn’t even have a chance to breathe, I don’t think. They were just dead as soon as they walked out of the gate. That was a shame because when I heard the shots I thought it was my daughter.”

The officer fired three shots, police said.

“They need to learn that all dogs are not aggressive at all,” Thompson said. “All dogs are not aggressive. Luna and our puppies were not aggressive at all. The neighbors loved our dogs.”

Died at the scene on Wednesday. Luna died a short time later in the backyard. The third dog was injured.

“My mind was wandering everywhere,” Namora said. “It was spinning around. I cried. I hit walls. I went crazy.”

The Thompsons said Luna was pregnant.

“It’s terrible,” Namora said. “It’s traumatizing because my mother lost her sleeping companion, and I lost my emotional support.”

D.C. police have not said why the officer opened fire. The Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating the incident and says the details of the case will be reviewed to determine whether the use of force is within policy.
