H. Susan ‘Sue’ Buck | Journal overview

H. Susan “Sue” Buck, 74, of Terre Haute passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at Union Hospital.

She was born Oct. 16, 1949, in Terre Haute, the son of Kenneth L. Buck and Mary M. Butwin Buck.

Survivors include: her siblings, Kenneth J. Buck (Laura) of Jasper, and Mary Ellen Buck and Dorothy Buck, both of Seelyville; cousins, Dan Buck (Brandi) and Joe Buck (Joanna), both of Jasper; great nieces and nephews, Maci, Merin, Maggie, Julio and Jack; two special aunts, Helen M. Meunier and Betty Butwin; and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Sue taught middle school math at Waynetown School for 16 years and at Northridge Middle School for 21 years. She lived in Crawfordsville for forty years. She coached eighth-grade volleyball at both schools for many years. Sue was the scorekeeper for the North Montgomery baseball team for many years, along with coach and good friend Mike Strickler. She spent a lot of time tutoring students after school in both Crawfordsville and Terre Haute.

She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, National Slovak Association and Delta Kappa Gamma Student Educational Association.

Sue attended St. Benedict and Annunciation elementary schools. She was a 1967 graduate of Schulte High School and would have been a high school athlete had Title IX been passed a few years earlier. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Indiana State University.

Sue was a big sports fan and followed ISU basketball, Notre Dame football and the St. Louis Cardinals. She was an avid traveler and visited 46 of the 50 states with her sisters and a cousin. Susie was one of 37 grandchildren of John and Anna Butwin and she was very close to all her nieces and nephews and would do anything for them. She played softball and volleyball while living in Crawfordsville. She will be missed by her cat, Willow.

The family would like to thank the staff at Majestic Care Deming Park for the excellent care Susie received over the past four months.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 6, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Seelyville, with Father Todd Riebe officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 5 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., Terre Haute, with a rosary at 7:30 PM
