Willow Smith doesn’t think the “nepo baby” label applies to her because she’s “a black woman.”

The debate around nepotism and the privileges that come with it has become increasingly relevant. The constant tug of war between having celebrated parents and having an iota of talent to prove yourself in the industry is evident in all fields, from music to acting.

The most recent commenter on this is Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s daughter, Willow Smith. The 23-year-old is pursuing a career as a singer and has already released many hits. At the same time, she is also trying to carve her place in the acting world with films like The Lorax.

Smith claimed that she has a strong mind that would have been drawn to creativity even if her parents were not actors. She overcame the insecurities and talked about how the negativity in her mind forced her to work harder and realize that she didn’t owe anyone any explanations. Speaking about how her culture and identity fit into the mix, she claimed:

“There have been some experiences where I went to a place where I’ve worked in the past and was even able to hang my picture on the wall, and they treated me like, ‘This is a little out of your price range’ or ‘You don’t belong here Real.’ Because you are black in America, even with privileges, which I will never deny, you are still black. And I love being black.”

Despite being a brand ambassador for several beauty brands and signing ad campaigns, some places discriminate against you based on your skin color. Smith describes how her popularity sometimes fades as people notice her skin color and fundamental prejudices are exposed. The singer goes on to talk about how she grew up with the speech that encourages her to work twice as hard as others.

It can often be very lonely and struggle to follow a certain path in life. It’s not often you find people you can connect with and be friends with. In the interview, Smith elaborates on how she has often felt like a loner in her life. The questions of uncertainty and loneliness have often occupied her.

“As a child it worried me because I thought: will this be like this forever? Will I just be alone? I’ve always had a different thought. I would go to my mom and (say), ‘I’m not sure this is going to work. How do you think this will go?’ And she always said, ‘You will find your tribe.’ And I feel like I’ve found my tribe, not necessarily in specific people.

She goes on to talk about how she felt connected to people through their dedication and commitment to one service and one cause. The people she has met in her life so far have all found a goal to work towards, and that is the common thread that ties everyone together. Smith feels that the problems with loneliness disappear once a person is attracted to energies.
