Journalist hit by stray bullet at Kano Govt. House

A journalist of Abubakar Rimi Television Station (ARTV), Naziru Idris Ya’u, attached to Kano Government House, has been hit by a stray bullet.

Saturday Telegraph gathered that the bullet hit his shoulder shortly after he returned to the government residence at 8:30 pm on Friday after an assignment with Governor Abba Yusuf.

The incident occurred on May 3, 2024, a day set aside by the United Nations for the celebration of World Press Freedom Day to highlight the dangers journalists face in the performance of their duties.

Nazir Ya’u, who was immediately taken to the Government House clinic, said the origin of the stray bullet remains unknown.

He was later discharged after treatment and medical staff at the clinic said the reporter was lucky because the bullet was not fired at close range.

Following the incident, Government House police personnel initiated a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances that led to this alarming event.

As of the time of compiling this report, there has been no official statement from Kano Government House on the shooting.

However, the silence on the issue has led to a wave of speculation and unease among the press community, highlighting the dangers journalists face even in so-called safe places.

When he contacted the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Saturday, his phone line was not answered
