Mandatory for tourists to purchase an e-pass for traveling to Ooty and Kodaikanal by road

The summer paradises of Ooty in South India (also known as Udagamandalam) and Kodakanal fascinate travelers with their pleasant climate, with minimum temperatures of 14 degrees Celsius and maximum 20 degrees (on May 4), while the rest of India is facing a severe heat wave. To ensure conservation of the Nilgiris ecosystem and control the influx of tourists, the Madras High Court recently made the use of e-pass system mandatory for travelers going to the Ooty and Kodaikanal. This initiative, which will be in effect from May 7 to June 30, 2024, aims to regulate the flow of tourists during the high summer season.

If you are planning to visit the picturesque hill stations, make sure you apply for an e-pass as the Madras High Court has directed travelers to use it to address the challenges posed by the growing number of tourists in these hill stations brings. There is no limit on the issuance of e-passes; local residents are exempt from this requirement.

The court ruling also addresses the problem of traffic congestion, especially along the tricky ghat roads leading to Ooty and Kodaikanal. By implementing e-passes, the court aims to collect data on vehicular movement and reduce congestion on the roads.
