“I’m giving up my job, I can’t find a house”

Nurses struggle to find affordable housing in Como

Nurses who recently won competitions to work in hospitals in Como face a major challenge: finding affordable housing. Many of these young healthcare professionals, who come from abroad or other parts of Italy, struggle to find housing at a price they can afford.

Carmen Prevete, a 27-year-old nurse from Naples, shared her experiences looking for a place to live in Como. “Some colleagues are quitting their jobs because of the high rent,” she says. “To come and work here, you have to make a small investment. Not everyone has parents who can support them financially.”

Prevete said it is difficult to find accommodation in Como because private individuals prioritize cross-border commuters or tourists for short-term rentals. Agencies also charge high retainers and interest rates, making it even more challenging for nurses with limited budgets.

She also highlighted the problem of fake rental ads, where scammers ask for deposits for non-existent apartments. Many nurses feel frustrated and desperate in their search for a place to live.

In response to this housing crisis, some are calling on hospitals or government agencies to provide temporary housing for nurses and other professionals. This would give them the chance to stabilize and not have to worry about finding a place to live once they arrive in Como.

The lack of affordable housing affects not only nurses, but also other professionals with middle-class incomes. It is crucial for Como’s hospitals to tackle this problem and ensure that valuable healthcare professionals are not driven away by high rents.

Efforts are being made to find solutions to this problem, calling for the provision of fair housing for nurses and other professionals working in Como. It is clear that action must be taken to support these essential workers and ensure they can continue to contribute to the city’s healthcare system.
