Samsung slashes, MSI matches: monster deals on 49-inch gaming monitors

Gamer playing on Samsung's 49-inch Odyssey OLED gaming monitor.

If you’ve come to the conclusion that your battle station needs nothing more than a giant gaming monitor than “Whew, doggy!”, then you’re going to love today’s deals landscape. Monster screens measuring 49 inches or even larger have seen a number of price cuts recently, with both Samsung and MSI taking action. Let’s take a look at some of the tempting options available right now.

We kick off with Samsung’s 49-inch Odyssey OLED G9 (G95SC)which is marked to $1,099.99 at Amazon. That’s a hefty $700 price reduction from MSRP (39% off) on a large screen with a desirable OLED panel for color-accurate images and barely any response time to speak of (just 0.03ms). It also features a fast 240Hz refresh rate, FreeSync Premium Pro and G-Sync Compatible badges, and DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification.
The resolution of this beast is 5120 x 1440 (32:9 aspect ratio), so it’s essentially like having two 2560 x 1440 displays rolled into one chassis. It is also striking that this latest discount results in price parity Samsung’s G93SCthat is too discounted to $1,099.99. They’re essentially the same monitor, except the G95SC adds smart features, a game bar, and comes with an IR remote.

Our only real negative is the warranty. When we asked a Samsung support agent about the warranty terms for the G95SC, we were told that it only has a one-year warranty and no burn-in coverage. On the plus side, measures have been put in place to help combat burn-in, which is less of an issue these days (although not non-existent).

In order not to be left behind in terms of prices, MSI’s 49-inch MPG QD-OLED (491CQP) gaming monitor is also for sale and slightly cheaper, priced at $999.99 at Amazon (Save $100). It shares some of the same specs as the Samsung Odyssey model above, such as an OLED panel with a 5120×1440 resolution (32:9 aspect ratio), a negligible 0.03ms response time, and DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification.

The main difference is that it has a slower (but still fast) 144Hz refresh rate and there’s no mention of it being G-Sync compatible. That doesn’t mean it won’t work with G-Sync, but your mileage may vary. In return, you save $100 compared to Samsung’s screen.

It should also be noted that MSI offers a 3-year warranty on this model, and it also explicitly covers burn-in.

Don’t want to pay extra for OLED? That’s certainly not necessary, you can Samsung 49-inch Odyssey G9 (G95C) gaming monitor for $799.99 at Amazon (save $500), which is 38% below MSRP. While it doesn’t have fancy display technologies like OLED or mini-LED, it is a large and bright screen that meets several desirable requirements.

First off, this is a FreeSync Premium Pro monitor. It also boasts DisplayHDR 1000 certification, part of which means it can reach an eye-popping peak brightness of 1,000 nits, which helps make HDR content stand out. Plus, you’re looking at the same 5120 x 1440 resolution (32:9 aspect ratio) as the other two displays above, along with a 240Hz refresh rate and a low gray-to-gray (GtG) response time of 1ms. Overall, it’s a solid value on a giant gaming monitor.
