Aidan O’Brien amazed by City Of Troy’s Qipco 2000 Guineas run

Aidan O’Brien was left searching for answers after City Of Troy’s desperately disappointing run in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas.

The well-supported 4/6 favorite was calm in the preliminaries but was a shadow of his two-year-old self in the race itself, coming off the bridle early and heading home ninth at the back.

Last in the boxes, Ryan Moore felt unlucky in the starting gates but his trainer wants to take him back to Ballydoyle and check out after the disappointing run.

He said: “He got upset in the stalls, Ryan said that was very unusual for him. He was very happy beforehand. There is nothing about that (it was too bad to be true).

“If we thought he would do that, we wouldn’t be here. We just have to see why that happened. We’ll take him home and take a look.

“That’s the way it is, we’ll try to find out why and try not to let it happen again. Sorry about that, everyone.”

O’Brien’s Auguste Rodin was a disappointing twelfth in the Guineas last year but recovered to win the Derby at Epsom and a step up in the trip now looks likely to be on the table for City Of Troy.

The son of Justify is looking at 7/1 with Sky Bet, Paddy Power and Betfair for the Derby on June 1.
