Ghanaians party big with Medikal during the O2 concert in London

Ghana’s biggest music stars wowed London at a sold-out concert in the British capital.

Top billing at O2’s Indigo venue on Friday evening went to Medikal – real name Samuel Adu Frimpon – one of the leading figures in the African rap scene.

The fans, including many Ghanaians, were happy to see the cream of Ghana’s talent.

Some media personalities, including digital creator BlacVolta, broadcaster Jay Foley and YouTuber Kwadwo Sheldon, even flew in from Ghana to watch the show.

Black Stars footballer Mohammed Kudus, who plays for Premier League side West Ham, was also present at the packed show.

Medikal also hosted the musical extravaganza, which featured several costume changes and act after act being introduced on stage. In between he showed some of his biggest hits.

One of the highlights was his performance with Ghanaian TV presenter Deborah Owusu-Bonsu, better known by her stage name Sister Derby.

They sang their hit Too Risky, recorded in 2017 when the two were still a couple.

Other guest artists included British-Ghanaian UK chart-topper Headie One, Black Entertainment Television (Bet) award winner Sarkodie and highlife singer Bisa Kdei.

Efya’s incredible vocal skills had fans throwing money on stage for the 37-year-old Ghana Music Award winner to show their appreciation – as often happens at Afrobeats concerts.

Before Shatta Wale performed his set, Medikal, 31, paid special tribute to his friend, saying how he had mentored him at the start of his career and helped him with money and cars – anecdotes that drew loud cheers from the audience .

The 39-year-old dancehall don then took the stage and performed a montage of songs, including 2022’s On God, arguably his biggest hit.

The evening ended with rising star Jay Bahd performing his unique Ghanaian drill music also known as “asakaa” with lyrics mainly in the Ghanaian Twi language.

To conclude, Medikal returned to the stage dressed entirely in white and thanked both the musicians and the packed audience for making it an evening to remember.

He fell to his knees and was showered with white confetti. The crowd went wild.
