“You haven’t seen the movie?” The GOP accidentally calls Trump the bad guy in ‘May the Fourth’ post

North Carolina’s Republican Party came under fire Saturday for a Star Wars-themed post intended to celebrate the Internet holiday “May the Fourth” and promote Donald Trump.

The official account of the Republican Party of North Carolina on X, formerly known as Twitter, posted an image of Trump holding a lightsaber. The text reads: “May the Fourth Be With You,” which is a play on the lines of Star Wars: “May the force be with you.”

The problem, as social media users were quick to point out, is that the ex-president was shown holding a red lightsaber. According to Vox, “Sith usually use red-colored” lightsabers, like Darth Vader’s.

National security attorney Bradley Moss wondered whether the GOP outpost was ignorant.

“You gave him… a red lightsaber? Do you know something?’ he asked Saturday.

Democrat Harry Sisson said, “You know the guys with the red lightsabers are the bad guys, right? I don’t think I’ve seen the movie?’

@Venti__Closer replied to the post: “At least you know he’s on the dark side.”

@cj_bria said, “So he’s a Sith Lord? Sounds good!”

User Nick Anderson, @NickAnderson217, had a slightly different opinion than others.

“People are too concerned with the fact that it’s red… Why did they make his saber so small?” Anderson asked.

An user, @t3hrobzlqxI looked around a bit.

“Something about this annoyed me, so I did some research. First of all, the fact that they gave him a Red Lightsaber for this, while Red is traditionally associated with the Sith and the Empire, should tell you that whoever created this meme knows nothing about Star Wars, or that they know exactly what they and somehow think the Sith/Empire are the good guys,” they wrote. “Second, I was curious about whose saber they gave him, as it didn’t explicitly remind me of anyone’s saber. I had to do a Reverse Image search, but I discovered that this is a design from one of the many Lightsaber Storefronts online, which does not belong to any on-screen character from the series. The images they use even have the color of the leaf as Blue, so they immediately changed it to Reds are Blue,” but they literally could have used a whole rainbow of colors to evoke ‘Oh, it’s a lightsaber,’ but they insisted on making his lightsaber red.”

They concluded:

“As a Star Wars fan, I honestly find this cheap attempt to win my vote more insulting than anything Star Wars fans have ever objected to. This is probably the most embarrassing cash-in I’ve ever seen, and I’ve ACTUALLY watched the Star Wars Holiday Special in its entirety, ironically, several times.”
