Letter to the editor: About saving a sand dune and restoring confidence in the government

To the editor:

Last week’s unanimous vote by the Coastal Resources Commission to reinstate Area of Environmental Concern status for Jockey’s Ridge was very encouraging. However, I was dismayed by the sense I got from the comments of some younger people that they had lost confidence in government agencies to act responsibly.

Fifty-one years ago, then 28-year-old Carolista Baum took action to protect Jockey’s Ridge, convinced she could make a difference in state government, and, WOW, did she ever. The 20-somethings who spoke at the CRC meeting last week didn’t seem to believe they could do the same. To me, that is a much bigger concern than the future of Jockey’s Ridge.
