Demolition is beginning to make way for the $2.2 billion expansion of the Henry Ford Hospital

Demolition began Monday on a former office building in Detroit’s New Center area to make way for a planned $2.2 billion expansion of Henry Ford Hospital.

The building at 2850 W. Grand Blvd. dates from the 1950s and formerly housed the headquarters of Health Alliance Plan. HAP’s headquarters have since moved to Troy. The building is owned by WIN Properties of Rye Brook, New York.

The health care system says it expects the demolition and subsequent cleanup to take several months.

A groundbreaking expansion of the hospital – including a new 21-storey hospital tower – is expected to take place later this year. The new buildings are expected to open their doors in 2029.

The expansion project is one part of a $3 billion joint development involving Henry Ford Health, Michigan State University and the Pistons organization that will include 662 apartments and a medical research center in addition to the hospital tower.
