We saved Ghana $90 million in the 2020 elections

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that it has achieved a major milestone in its procurement process and the resulting cost savings in election expenditure.

According to the commission, it has managed to reduce the per capita cost of elections from $13 in 2016 to $7 in 2020, saving the country a significant amount of $90 million.

In a press statement on May 6, Electoral Commission President Jean Mensa highlighted the commission’s efforts to increase efficiency and transparency in recent years.

The European Commission said it has introduced an open, competitive bidding process for its tenders since 2020, with around 95% of tenders advertised in local newspapers.

According to Jean Mensa, this approach has not only delivered value for money in terms of services and materials, but has also introduced significant competition, leading to a dramatic reduction in purchasing costs.

“… As such, approximately 95% of our purchasing is advertised in local newspapers can get value for money for our services and materials. It has also removed competition from our purchasing, drastically reducing the prices at which we purchase our materials.

“It is no wonder that we have managed to reduce the cost of our elections from $13 per capita in 2016 to $7.7 per capita in 2020 and save our nation a significant amount of $90 million dollars saved,” she stated.
