Kore-eda has been chosen as a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival this month

Critically acclaimed Japanese film director Hirokazu Kore-eda has been selected as one of the jury members for the 77th Cannes Film Festival, which awards the highest prize of the festival, the Palme d’Or, the festival association announced.

Kore-eda, 61, will be the first Japanese in eleven years to sit on the jury since Naomi Kawase in 2013.

The jury is chaired by American director Greta Gerwig. The nine jury members include American actress Lily Gladstone and Lebanese director Nadine Labaki. They will decide who will walk away with the Palme d’Or and other prizes.

Kore-eda won the Palme d’Or in 2018 for his title “Shoplifters”.

The festival takes place from May 14.
