New horror movie Tarot looks like a box office bomb, but it could be a sneaky hit

There was a lot of pessimism about last weekend’s box office. I myself have thrown some of that pessimism into the void. A lot of that has to do with the fact that the summer movie season kicked off with the opening of “The Fall Guy” to a hugely disappointing $28.5 million, marking the worst start to the summer in more than two decades. Much less ink has been spilled on Sony’s new horror film “Tarot,” which also premiered this weekend and entered the top five of the domestic charts with a $6.5 million debut. On the surface, things don’t look good for a movie from a major studio opening on more than 3,100 screens in North America. However, this could be a sneaky little hit.
