George Kambosos Jr. boldly declared that Vasiliy Lomachenko no longer “has that dog in him” as the two prepare for the vacant IBF lightweight world title.

The Australian star, who has not lost to anyone other than Devin Haney, will face Lomachenko at the RAC Arena in Perth on Sunday.

Boxing: Lomachenko v Kambosos IBF lightweight world title fight | MON 12 MAY 12:00 AEST | Order now with Main Event on Kayo Sports.

It will be Kambosos Jr’s first fight since a controversial victory over England’s Maxi Hughes in which he took home the IBO world title.

As for Lomachenko, he hasn’t fought since losing to Devin Haney via unanimous decision last May, although some boxing experts disagreed with the judges’ scorecards.

It sets up a tantalizing prospect between the two lightweight contenders, although at 36, Lomachenko is unlikely to have as many years in the sport as Kambosos.

And the Australian believes his motivation against Lomachenko, a world champion in three weight divisions, will simply prove too high.

“A 100 percent Lomachenko still has a lot left in the tank,” Kambosos said Boxing scene.

‘But I don’t think he has that dog in him anymore. I don’t think he wants it as much as I do now.

“You can never overlook a man like Lomachenko. I would be the biggest idiot if I did that. Lomachenko is an all-time great man and a man we have a lot of respect for. We are preparing for the best version of Lomachenko.

“As soon as the bell rings, the respect goes out the door and it’s time to get the job done.”

The fight between Kambosos and Lomachenko is one that has been in the making for almost two years as they were supposed to fight back in 2022, but the latter withdrew and opted to stay in Ukraine due to the war against Russia.
