Edward Olivares’ grand slam, Mitch Keller’s complete game led Pirates over Angels

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Edward Olivares hit his first career grand slam and Mitch Keller threw a five-hitter to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night.

Olivares’ slam came from Tyler Anderson in the third inning and broke a scoreless tie as the Pirates advanced to their third straight win after a five-game losing streak. The Angels lost for the 14th time in 17 games.

The Pirates loaded the bases with no outs in the third when Andrew McCutchen and Ke’Bryan Hayes hit walks around Bryan Reynolds’ double. One out later, Olivares hit 450 feet into the left field stands.

Keller (3-3) allowed just one run on Zach Neto’s solo shot in the fifth inning and threw 109 pitches in his second career complete game. He struck out five and walked one while getting 14 putouts on ground balls in a game that lasted just 1:55.

The full game came nearly a year after Keller went nine innings to beat the Colorado Rockies on May 8.

Keller had given up 11 points and 16 hits in his previous three starts.

Olivares’ grand slam accounted for all the runs scored on Anderson (2-4) in 6 1/3 innings, but the left-hander lost his fourth straight decision. Anderson allowed six hits, struck out five and walked three.

Olivares also doubled and he and Reynolds each had two singles for the Pirates.

Mickey Moniak scored two goals for the Angels.
