Actor Sterling K. Brown will star in Todd Snyder’s summer campaign

Sterling K. Brown certainly wears tailored clothes well.

So it makes sense that Todd Snyder would tap the award-winning actor as the face of his summer collection.

Brown, who has a mantelpiece full of Emmy, Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe awards and was nominated for an Academy Award this year for his role in “American Fiction,” will be the cover model in Snyder’s latest catalog, out Tuesday , and will also be featured in digital and out-of-home advertising for the designer.

“Snyder is not only an incredible actor whose body of work speaks for itself, but also has an easygoing charm that made him a natural choice to lead a masterclass in our summer collection,” said Snyder. “He understands that good style can be achievable and even playful, and our collection is packed with looks that are relaxed in their proportions and textures, yet have a luxurious elegance that achieves just that.”

Snyder said he has worked with actor Matt Bomer twice in the past and the response has been “great,” so he was open to working with another actor. “I always enjoy working with celebrities and it helps increase our brand awareness when we have someone who knows everyone,” he said.

Brown was photographed by Matthew Brookes at The Sheats-Goldstein Residence in Los Angeles wearing statement pieces from the summer collection, including the Wythe Suit, the Striped Cabana Shirt, the Italian Suede Cargo Suit and the Luxe Mesh Tank.

Snyder said shooting actors instead of models results in a different end product, and in Brown’s case it turned into a “great, distinctive moment,” he said.

Snyder said Brown had been on his wish list for a while and because the summer collection is so heavily based on oversized and loose tailoring pieces, this campaign was ideal for him. “We are always looking for the right face or character for the mood of the collection and he wears so good tailoring, is masculine, looks good and fits well,” said Snyder.

In addition to the fashion shoot, the catalog includes a Q&A feature with Brown, titled “Sterling’s Time to Shine.” The three-page article discusses why he gave up a potential career in economics and finance at Stanford University to pursue acting: “I noticed that when I was in a play, I got better grades everywhere. So I talked to my mom about it and she was nothing but supportive. I prayed about it, and I ended up switching from an economics major to a drama major,” he said — and how he tore his ACL during the Shakespeare in the Park production of “Twelfth Night” in New York. But the injury didn’t slow him down and he continued to build his career on Broadway, in television and films.

He received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor this year for his work in ‘American Fiction’, and next up is the Netflix film ‘Atlas’ before reconnecting with the creator of ‘This Is Us’ for a new series , ‘Paradise City’. ”, which he also produces.

As for his personal style, Brown described it in the article as “California chic, the kind of looks that would make you look good playing with your kids and then going to a dinner party.”

Snyder said that while nothing has been decided yet, he suspects he will work with Brown again in the future. “We tend to rethink things,” he says. “We don’t look at these things as one-offs, but as relationships.” He said he has dressed Brown for a few red carpet appearances and since opening his store at The Grove in Los Angeles, he has been getting many more requests from celebrities to dress them. Another store will open on Abbot Kinney in LA in a few weeks, further expanding its presence there.

“LA has always been our second largest market (after New York), and that world is becoming increasingly important to us,” Snyder said.
