O’Halloran hopes Boomsong comes back with a bang

A troubled gelding who has been out of racing for 39 weeks and underwent surgery to remove a bone chip can put it all aside and return in style at Wednesday’s Warwick Farm meeting.

On a rain-affected track that may scale back to a tough nine or even an eight, five-year-old Boomsong returns in a competitive Benchmark 72 Hcp over 1000 meters for the older gallopers.

It has been a frustrating nine months for Hawkesbury-based trainer Stephen O’Halloran and a long list of owners in Boomsong since he failed to beat a rider home in a similar race at this track last winter.

It was an abrupt setback for connections who had to send Boomsong back to the paddock.

Just six weeks earlier he had arrived at Mark Newnham’s stable for Hong Kong at Randwick, and enjoyed his new surroundings, winning a BM 64 at home before taking second place in a similar company at Kembla.

Shortly afterwards, he had to undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone chip from his right front leg.

But with plenty of time to recover, Boomsong indicated three weeks ago he was ready to return with a clean trial in Hawkesbury.

And O’Halloran has seemingly found a suitable late autumn race, with Boomsong liking tough terrain as the son of prolific wet track sire Your Song.
