Rescuers from South Africa say they have made contact with 11 people in a collapsed building

CAPE TOWN, May 7, 2024 (BSS/AFP) – Rescuers in South Africa said on Tuesday they
had made contact with eleven people trapped in the rubble of a building below
construction that collapsed in the coastal town of George, killing five people
leaving about 50 missing.

The city government says that there was a construction crew of 75 people on the construction site at the time
The five-story building collapsed on Monday for unknown reasons.

“We are in contact with eleven people, four of them are stuck in a basement,” the spokesperson said.
Colin Deiner, chief director of disaster management, told a news conference.

The priority of rescuers is to get out anyone still trapped
much of the day, he added.

They will then begin a process of lifting the different floors of each
others, he said.

“There is a possibility that people are still alive,” Deiner said.

The work is expected to last until the weekend, he added.

Twenty-six people were rescued from the rubble, five of whom died.
municipal authorities have previously said this, adding that 49 others were still there
not mentioned.
