Pakistan is experiencing temperatures up to 5°C above this week

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said temperatures in Pakistan are likely to be up to 5 degrees Celsius higher than the average temperature this week.

According to the Met Office, high weight in the upper atmosphere will persist in most parts of the country, especially the southern half. A westerly wave is likely to enter western parts of the country on May 10 (evening/night). The upper parts are likely to be held on May 11.

Under the influence of this weather system, daytime temperatures will be 2-5°C higher than normal in Pakistan this week, while rain-wind/thunderstorms will return to normal over the weekend.

Balochistan: From May 8 to 10, daytime temperatures are expected to be 3-05°C higher than normal. Rain accompanied by wind and thundershowers is forecast in Quetta, Zhob, Ziarat, Barkhan, Kalat, Khuzdar, Qilla Saifullah, Kohlu and Mastung on May 10 (evening/night) and May 11. Moreover, storms are expected in Kharan, Chagi and Panjgur during this period.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Daytime temperatures are expected to be 02-03°C above normal between May 8 and 10. Rain, wind and thundershowers are expected in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, Kohistan, Shangla, Buner, Malakand, Waziristan, Kohat, Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, Bajaur, Mohmand, Karak, Khyber, Peshawar , Charsadda, Nowshera, Swabi, Mardan and Kurram from May 10 (night) to May 12 (morning). Isolated hailstorms are also likely during this period.

Gilgit-Baltistan/Kashmir: From May 8 to 10, daytime temperatures are likely to remain 3-05°C above normal. Rain and thundershowers are expected in Gilgit-Baltistan (Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, Shigar), Kashmir (Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, Mirpur) on May 11 and 12.

Punjab/Islamabad: From May 8 to 10, daytime temperatures are expected to be 3-05°C higher than normal. Rain accompanied by wind and thundershowers is expected in Murree, Galyat, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh , Jhang, Khushab, Sargodha, Mianwali, Pakpattan and Sahiwal from May 10 to May 12. Similarly, rain is expected in Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Bhakkar, Layyah, Multan, Kot Addu, Muzaffargarh, Rahim Yar Khan, Sadiqabad, Khanpur, Bahawalpur and Bahawalnagar on May 10 and 11. Isolated hailstorms are also forecast during this period.

Sindh: From May 8 to 10, daytime temperatures are likely to remain 3-05°C above normal. Rain-wind/thundershowers are expected at Sukkur, Jacobabad, Kashmore, Larkana, Dadu, Qambar Shahdad Kot, Jamshoro and Sanghar on May 10 (night) and 11.

Possible consequences and advice:

Farmers are encouraged to regulate crop watering and wheat harvesting accordingly. The general public is advised to minimize unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight. Storms, hailstorms and lightning can disrupt the daily routine and pose risks to standing crops, but also to loose structures such as electricity poles, vehicles and solar panels.
