Heidi Klum and Janelle Monáe wear ET costumes for their Halloween parties
NEW YORK (AP) — Heidi Klum and Janelle Monáe chose extraterrestrial Halloween costumes this year – both opting to dress as the stumpy alien ET for their parties on opposite coasts.
While the similar costumes will likely spark “who wore it best” debates popular in celebrity magazines, the stars chose different interpretations of the creature from Steven Spielberg’s 1982 classic, “ET the Extra-Terrestrial.”
Klum’s husband Tom Kaulitz dressed as ET, while the model and television personality came as Mrs. ET with animatronic eyes, a long neck and a blonde wig. Monae opted for a blunt version of the little alien, waddling on the red carpet at her Halloween party Thursday night. The Grammy winner’s ET had animatronic eyes and also sported a yellow index finger, which mimicked the movie character’s light-up finger.
Monáe also adopted a different voice during interviews on Thursday, similar to ET’s. She downplayed any rivalry with Klum, telling The Associated Press: “There can be two Hello queens. I love Heidi.”
Klum and Monáe take Halloween seriously every time they dress up elaborate costumes. This year, their Halloween night parties took place on opposite coasts, with Klum gathering famous friends in New York and Monáe hosting her party in Los Angeles.
Klum’s face was in the creature’s neck, allowing her to see and speak. She told the AP that her costume had been in the works for a year.
“I’ve been a fan of ET since I was nine years old,” Klum said. As she spoke, the mouth of her costume head moved due to the mechanical features within the suit.
“I just enjoy becoming this thing. ET is very small and so I thought it would be fun to play with the proportions as well,” Klum said.
Klum and Kaulitz tenderly touched heads after unveiling their costumes amid smoke and a light show at Klum’s party.
Monáe unveiled her ET costume on “The Jennifer Hudson Show” on Wednesday. She also did an extended photo shoot on Instagram, where she appeared on a bicycle with ET in a basket in the front, paying tribute to one of the most iconic moments from Spielberg’s film.
