A Walmart employee in Monkey Junction was shot and killed Saturday, according to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
Around 6 p.m., several Walmart employees attempted to prevent a man from shoplifting at the Walmart, located at 5135 Carolina Beach Road, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
A struggle occurred and “the suspect brandished a firearm and fired one shot, striking a Walmart employee,” the release said.
According to police, the victim died at the scene.
The suspect fled but was confronted by a deputy in the parking lot and taken into custody, the sheriff’s office said.
As of late Saturday evening, the identities of the victim and suspect had not been released. The sheriff’s office had also not released the charges against the suspect.
