Historic Shelton Golf Club destroyed by fire overnight
SHELTON, CT (WFSB) – A major fire destroyed a historic building at Highland Golf Club in Shelton late Friday night, just months before it was set to celebrate its 125th anniversary.
Firefighters responded to the golf course, located at 261 Wooster Street, shortly before midnight after receiving reports of a large flame.
Upon arrival, crews discovered that the fire had spread to the roof and was quickly engulfing the building.
No one was inside when the fire broke out and fortunately no one was injured.
The last person to leave the building is believed to have left around 6pm on Friday.
The fire’s spread was fueled by dry, windy conditions that also caused several wildfires in the area.
Mutual aid from neighboring departments in Monroe and Derby helped prevent the flames from reaching nearby homes.
“A few small embers are enough to probably start a half-acre fire down the street,” Shelton Assistant Fire Chief Bob Finta said. “. That is why we now let the water flow through the building. Try to keep embers or sparks from flying when the day breaks.”
The fire brigade is still working to get the fire under control and prevent further forest fires in the area.
Officials are now investigating the cause of the fire.
It is expected that the fire brigade will take over the investigation.
