JUUL was once valued at more than $30 billion and has been embroiled in multiple lawsuits since 2018 over its role in the teen vaping epidemic.
Forget package warnings: David Lynch takes the anti-smoking campaign into his own hands.
In an interview with People published Thursday, the “Twin Peaks” co-creator revealed that he needs supplemental oxygen to do anything more physically demanding than walking across a room.
“I really wanted to convey this: think about it. You can stop doing these things that will eventually kill you,” Lynch told the magazine. “I owe it to them – and to myself – to say that.”
The director of ‘Mulholland Drive’ revealed earlier this year that he was diagnosed with emphysema in 2020, a lung disease mainly caused by smoking. After the announcement in Sight and Sound magazine, he wrote on
Despite the health problems, Lynch told People that he has no regrets about smoking. “It was important to me. I wish what every addict wishes: that what we love is good for us,” he said.
Lynch, whose projects often feature characters with a cigarette in their hands, revealed that he started smoking at the age of eight and only quit two years ago when he “saw the writing on the wall.”
“I loved the smell of tobacco, the taste of tobacco. I loved lighting cigarettes. It was part of being a painter and a filmmaker for me,” Lynch said.

News of his departure comes as tobacco use among young people continues to decline. A recent study from the Centers for Disease Control shows that middle and high school students are consuming less tobacco than they have in a generation, driven in part by a decline in e-cigarette use.
However, there has been a spike in the popularity of nicotine pouches like Zyn, which has become the second most popular form of tobacco for children, the study found.
Lynch testified to the difficulty of quitting after years of smoking. “When the going got tough, I had that first cigarette, and it was a one-way ticket to heaven,” he told People.
