US Postal Service honors Betty White with new stamp | American news
Late actor Betty White will be honored with a U.S. postage stamp bearing her likeness beginning in 2025, officials said.
The US Postal Service (USPS) announced on Friday that it would release a postage stamp featuring a digital image of White.
White, best known for roles in sitcoms The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Golden Girls, died in 2021 at the age of 99. During her career, which spanned more than eight decades, she received eight Emmys, one Grammy and three film acting credits. Guild awards.
The stamp shows a digitally created portrait of White, based on a 2010 photo of her taken by Kwaku Alston. The image shows White smiling in front of a violet background adorned with lighter, vibrant spots, which the Postal Service says “matches her bubbly personality.”
In the announcement, the USPS said the stamp – which will be sold in a sheet of 20 – captures White’s “spritely sense of fun.”
The Postal Service described White as “an icon of American television” who “shared her humor and warmth with viewers for seven decades.”
“The comedic actor, who gained younger generations of fans in her 90s, was also honored as a compassionate advocate for animals,” the announcement said.
USPS art director Greg Breeding designed the stamp with original art by illustrator Dale Stephanos.
White’s stamp was one of several announced Friday that would be released in 2025. Among the others was a stamp featuring Allen Toussaint, the New Orleans-born pianist, singer, songwriter, composer, arranger and music producer who died in 2015.
Other 2025 stamps included a New Year’s stamp for the Year of the Snake, a 1794 compass rose stamp, a love stamp with art by Keith Haring, as well as stamps featuring the Appalachian Trail and more.
Announcing the new stamps, Lisa Bobb-Semple, director of USPS Stamp Services, said that “this first look at our 2025 program…demonstrates our commitment to providing a wide range of subjects and designs for philatelists and stamp enthusiasts alike .”
The agency added that the list of new stamps released Friday was only a partial list and that more stamps would be announced in the coming weeks and months.
