Damen launches fully electric RSD-E Tug 2513 for the port of Antwerp-Bruges

On April 12, Damen Shipyards Group launched the second of its fully electric RSD-E Tugs 2513 at Damen Song Cam Shipyard. The tug is being built for the port of Antwerp-Bruges, together with five conventional RSD Tugs 2513. When delivered later this year, it will be the first fully electric tug to operate in European waters.

The port was one of the first to operate a conventional RSD Tug 2513 after Damen launched the vessel in 2018. It was the success of this vessel that led to the Port of Antwerp-Bruges’ latest order from Damen as it strives to increase sustainability.

The Belgian port, one of the busiest in Europe, has committed to being CO2 neutral by 2050. This order for six ships from Damen is representative of this commitment. Each of the ships in the order is fully compliant with IMO Tier III regulations, with the RSD-E Tug 2513 able to operate with zero emissions.

The port’s intention is to gradually move towards zero emissions and is taking a leading role as an innovator and facilitator to achieve this goal. The port currently operates a hydrogen tugboat and will soon start operating a renovated methanol tugboat.

The RSD-E Tug 2513 can perform at least two towing jobs on one charge and is fully charged in just two hours. The battery system is designed to withstand 30,000 cycles during its life cycle, which is consistent with the ship’s service life.

In addition to supplying the ship, Damen also supplies the port of Antwerp-Bruges with the loading equipment and onshore loading infrastructure required to sail the ship.
