Astana (Kazakhstan), May 3 (PTI) Brijesh Tamta and Aryan entered the final along with five other boxers as Indian boxers on Friday assured themselves of 22 medals in various categories at the ASBC Asian U-22 & Youth Boxing Championships 2024.

Of the 22 medals, 12 were won by women at the prestigious tournament.

Brijesh started proceedings for India, defeating Mongolia’s Taalaibek Iasur in the 48kg category with a convincing 5-0 scoreline.

After the same series, Rahul Kundu (75kg) and Aryan (92kg) surpassed China’s Kanjiebayi Ersi and Kyrgyzstan’s Alybaev Tynystan with identical unanimous decisions.

Sagar Jakhar (60kg), on the other hand, forced a referee to stop the match (RSC victory) in the final round against Sadirov Dilerbek from Kyrgyzstan.

Another Aryan (51kg), Yashwardhan Singh (63.5kg) and Priyanshu (71kg) further extended India’s winning run with split-decision verdicts.

Sumit (67kg) and Sahil (80kg) took the bronze medals after a 0-5 defeat against Sabyrkhan Torekhan of Kazakhstan and Zakirov Mukhammadaziz of Kyrgyzstan.

On Thursday evening, Dhruv Singh (80kg), Guddi (48kg) and Poonam (57kg) reached the last 4 leg of the U-22 category.

On Saturday, Olympian Preeti (54kg) and reigning youth world champion Vishvanath Suresh (48kg) along with 17 other boxers will take the lead for India in the U-22 semi-finals.

Muskan (75kg) and Alfiya Pathan (81kg) retired in their respective U-22 semi-finals.

The tournament witnessed high level action with the presence of over 390 boxers from over 24 countries including boxing powerhouses such as China, India, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan competing for the medals in 25 weight categories.

The finals for the youth and U-22 categories will be played on Monday and Tuesday respectively.
