Tractor-trailer collision on I-295 kills Petersburg man


State police said the driver of a pickup crashed into the oil rig while changing lanes. The impact caused both vehicles to lose control and the pickup hit a sign and some trees.

HOPEWELL – A Petersburg man was killed early Thursday morning in a tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 295, state police said.

Gregory Allen Joyner, 52, died when the pickup he was driving changed lanes and struck the front of a Freightliner tractor-trailer, state police Sgt. Jessica Shehan said in an email. Both vehicles went out of control and the Freighliner pushed the pickup into a sign and some trees.

Joyner, who was wearing a seat belt, was killed instantly. It is not yet known whether the driver of the tractor-trailer was injured.

The wreck happened just before 7 a.m. Thursday on northbound I-295, about a mile north of the Route 36 interchange.

An investigation is underway.
