What impact will Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s campaign have? have on the 2024 elections?

Third-party candidates are known to pull votes away from both Republicans and Democrats, but from which voters will Robert F. Kennedy Jr. win? put in the 2024 presidential election? MichMash host Cheyna Roth and Zach Gorchow of Gongwer News Service spoke with Detroit Free Press State Politics and Government Editor Emily Lawler to explain the impact a third-party candidacy will have.

In this episode:

  • Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and why people are attracted to him as a candidate
  • Michigan’s hottest 2024 elections
  • The Detroit Free Press project to profile various counties across the state as part of its election coverage

Lawler believes that even though Trump is in his third presidential election cycle, this election will be different.

“I think there are people who are not interested in politics,” Lawler said.

This condition could create an opportunity for a third-party candidate like Kennedy to achieve a historically unique result, she said.

“I expect there will be a lot more interest in a third-party candidate this cycle than we have seen in previous cycles. The challenge for RFK Jr. is that it is not clear who he is withdrawing from,” Lawler said. “Proportionality will ultimately matter a lot. Another thing is access to ballots. He’s on the Michigan ballot. I wonder what his prognosis is for getting on the ballot in all fifty states.”

Robert F. Kennedy is the biggest target for wandering-eyed voters.
