Kyren Wilson v David Gilbert LIVE: World Snooker Championship score and latest updates today

Man bites young boy’s ear, broadcast live during the World Snooker Championship

The World Snooker Championship action this afternoon is a scintillating duel between Kyren Wilson and David Gilbert. Wilson, who has played perhaps the most consistently great snooker of the tournament, scored a string of big breaks on his way to a 13-8 quarter-final victory over John Higgins, while Gilbert reached the last four in the World Championship for the first time in five years also with a 13-8 victory over Stephen Maguire.

There was nothing to separate the two throughout the afternoon as the lead traded hands throughout, leaving the duo level at 4-4 heading into tomorrow’s game. Gilbert scored the higher of the two, including a century break of 105 in the fourth frame.

Pre-tournament favorite and world number 1 Ronnie O’Sullivan crashed out in the quarter-final of the World Snooker Championship as Stuart Bingham advanced to the semi-finals after a thrilling and stylishly competent match at the Crucible.

Bingham returns to action on Thursday evening, where he will face Jak Jones, who pulled off another major upset by beating Judd Trump.

What is the setup of that one table here at the World Championship?

“It’s amazing. It’s so much fun to be part of it, all eyes are on you – when there are two tables there’s a lot of movement from the other side – a lot of noise and you know all the tension is on you is.

“I enjoy being part of it.”

Is Wilson expected to be the only seeded player left in the tournament?

“No, not at all,” he replied when asked the question, “I think it’s fascinating and a great line-up (for the semi-finals). It’s so unique and something we’ve never seen before.

“I have always believed in my own game that I can do it (win the tournament), but probably for all four players who are in the semi-finals, many people could not have imagined that they would be at this stage.

“It’s not necessarily about who’s still in it, I think it’s the person I beat in the last round. That was such a huge hurdle for me, beating someone like John Higgins, it takes blood, sweat and tears to beat him in three sessions. That’s what gave me confidence.

“You could have left Ronnie (O’Sullivan) there and I would still have liked to do the job because there is no point in avoiding these top players. Stuart (Bingham) was there and won the title, Jak Jones knocked out Judd Trump and Dave (Gilbert’s) beat the former world champion, so every player left has the right to go on and win this title.”

Kyren Wilson reacts to opening session

“I thought it was a good session, very open, very attacking, lots of big breaks. At the end of the day, people pay good money to see us play snooker so you want to perform. That’s probably why I tried a brutal maximum there.

“It would have been so special, it’s well documented that my kids were in school when I made my first one (maximum break of 147) and it would have been great because they were here.

“I was trying to have some fun with the audience at the same time and probably lost my concentration a little bit.”

Wilson stopped by the BBC studio after the session and gave his thoughts on the match so far, saying: “It was a good session, very open and attacking. There were a lot of good breaks.

“You want to perform for the audience and that’s why I tried for a cheeky 147. It would have been so special to make it for my boys.

“My brother (Taylor) told me (because he wasn’t focusing on winning the frame).”

2005 World Champion Shaun Murphy speaks on BBC Two:

“I would say 4-4 is a fair result after the first session. Dave had the slight advantage, but Kyren has a very solid technique and kept going.

“Kyren is one of the best in the world. His track record proves that.”

Kyren Wilson cuts a red to the middle left pocket after a break of 88. Gilbert stands up and shakes Wilson’s hand. The 147 slides away, but Wilson does what he had to do.

He enters the match level and a brilliantly exciting session comes to an end, with nothing separating the players.

When the break reaches 73, Wilson is heartily cheered as the frame should be his. Now the focus is on the possible maximum. Can he take it off?

When the next one falls, there are only four red wines left…

Great shot! Wilson has to cut the black thinly in the lower left pocket and succeeds. He is now 64 and has pocketed red-black combos during this break so far.

There is a possible 147 at stake for him, but the red players are not in the best positions. His focus will be on winning the frame.
