Doctors in Mumbai perform caesarean section under torchlight and deliver dead cubs; Mother dies hours later

In a tragic incident, a 26-year-old woman died on Monday after doctors performed a caesarean section on her under the flashlight of mobile phones at Sion Hospital in Mumbai. The woman died a few hours after doctors delivered a dead boy, who weighed about 4 kg.

Following the incident, Mumbai’s civic body, BMC, swung into action and formed a 10-member committee to probe the matter. The committee also included doctors from the state-run JJ Hospital.

The deceased woman has been identified as Saheedunnissa Ansari, a resident of Bhandup town in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, the woman’s relatives mobilized protests outside the hospital on Tuesday and Wednesday. The woman’s family members have also alleged that the hospital’s healthcare facility did not have necessary emergency equipment such as oxygen cylinders.

According to Times of Indiadoctors had to perform a caesarean section on her under the light of mobile phones on Monday due to frequent power cuts in the city.

However, the BMC executive health officer admitted there were some

problems with the generator in the healthcare facility that forced the doctors to make such a decision. She went on to say that the woman was postpartum

bleeding (PPH) which caused her to have severe vaginal bleeding after childbirth.

“PPH cannot be predicted,” the BMC official said, adding that Saheedunnissa also had convulsions before being moved. Notably, PPH is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality in India.
