Mumbai: A 26-year-old woman, identified as Saheedunnissa Ansari, succumbed on Monday after doctors at Sion Hospital in Mumbai performed a caesarean section on her under the torch of mobile phones due to a power outage.

The new mother died a few hours after doctors delivered a stillborn baby boy, who weighed about 4kg.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) formed a 10-member committee to probe the case, which also included doctors from state-run JJ Hospital.

The woman’s brother-in-law claimed that the newborn’s heart rate had dropped despite doctors not referring the case to a larger hospital for a second opinion.

The BMC responded that the power supply was disconnected only after the baby was born when doctors were stitching up the mother

The woman’s family members have also alleged that the hospital’s facility did not have the required oxygen cylinders.

An Executive Health Officer from BMC admitted to some problems with the generator in the healthcare facility; the doctors had to resort to using torches during delivery.

She also said the woman suffered from postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) which led to severe vaginal bleeding after delivery. She said PPH cannot be predicted, but the woman also had convulsions.
