Trump offers blunt response to RFK Jr.’s candidacy

Former President Donald Trump said Robert F. Kennedys an independent presidential bid could ultimately hurt him more than the president Joe Biden at the ballot box in November.

As usual, Trump addressed reporters after the court adjourned for a day his criminal trial in New York, in which he pleaded not guilty to falsifying business records. He denounced his prosecution and the gag order imposed on him by the judge Juan Merchan, which this week fined the former president $9,000 for violating it. The ex-president also touted his poll numbers.

“So we’re doing well,” Trump said. “Nevertheless, the polls are good. The polls are extremely good. The best we’ve ever had and it looks like we’re doing really well. Any questions?”

A reporter shouted a question about Kennedy and Trump responded:

RFK? I don’t know anything about him. Look, RFK scores very low. He is not a serious candidate. They say he’s hurting Biden. I don’t know who he’s hurting. He could hurt me. Don’t know. But he has very low numbers, certainly not numbers with which he can debate. And he needs to get his numbers much higher before he is credible. But the numbers, the numbers he takes away, they think will be against Biden. Don’t know. I’m not so sure. Could be

a bit against me, but I don’t see him as a factor.

Kennedy initially challenged Biden for the Democratic nomination before dropping out of the race and launching an independent bid. Recent polls have been all over the place when it comes to Kennedy, polling somewhere in the low single digits or mid teens depending on the survey.
