Pro-Palestinian protesters gather outside the U of U commencement

SALT LAKE CITY – Dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered Thursday evening outside the University of Utah’s commencement ceremony, just outside the Jon M. Huntsman Center. They then headed to the Salt Lake County Jail, where a protest organizer is being held today after their arrest.

That is the only reported arrest stemming from Thursday’s protest.

KSL NewsRadio’s Clayre Scott was on scene and said protesters began gathering around 5:30 p.m. At 6 p.m. they were singing and talking into microphones about their pro-Palestinian cause. Around 6:30 p.m., a group of about 15 to 20 graduates left the commencement ceremony to join them.

Scott said protesters cheered these graduates as they came out to join the demonstration.

According to Scott, there was no counter-protest. She said police were in the area but did not interact with protesters.

This story will be updated.
