Meryl Streep receives honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival; actor calls it ‘humbling and exciting at the same time’ | Hollywood

Veteran actor Meryl Streep will receive the honorary Palm d’Or at the opening ceremony of the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 14, organizers have announced. She will also be guest of honor at the ceremony, which will take place on May 14 on the stage of Grand Theater Lumiere. Meryl kicks off the upcoming edition with the price list from jury chairman Greta Gerwig. Meryl reacts to the news

Meryl Streep is one of the most celebrated actors in Hollywood history.

Meryl had only been to Cannes once before – although she did win the Best Actress award that year – in 1989 for A Cry in the Dark. She said in a statement: “I am immeasurably honored to receive the news of this prestigious award.”

She added: “Winning an award at Cannes, in front of the international community of artists, has always represented the highest achievement in the art of filmmaking. Standing in the shadow of those who have been honored before is both humbling and exciting. I’m really looking forward to coming to France in May to thank everyone personally.”

Festival organizers issue statement

“Having spanned nearly 50 years of cinema and embodied countless masterpieces, Meryl Streep is part of our collective imagination, our shared love of cinema,” festival organizers said in the statement.
