Chelsea win against rival Tottenham “one I am most happy about” – Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino says no Chelsea performance has made him happier than the one that saw the team beat London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Thursday evening.

The Blues were on top for the entire first half and took the lead when Trevoh Chalobah powerfully headed his first goal of the campaign from a Conor Gallagher set piece.

And when Nicolas Jackson reacted quickly to nod home after Cole Palmer’s second-half free-kick hit the crossbar, Pochettino’s team had done enough to secure victory and another league double over our London rivals.

“I don’t know if this is the best match of the season, but it is the match I am most happy with. The way we played and the way we competed is what we wanted from the beginning of the season.” said Pochettino as quoted on the club’s official website after the match.

“That’s what we want to apply to the team. We were so competitive and this way we can grow and do better in other areas.”

The victory was all the more impressive as Chelsea had fourteen senior players ruled out through injury. That placed extra responsibility on the starters and Pochettino highlighted one player who has taken it on in recent games.

“Noni Madueke was incredible today,” said Pochettino. “If you analyze him at the beginning of the season – before all the conversations and meetings, the clips and videos, this kind of stuff – he was always, like today, able to do a fantastic job with the ball.

“Obviously he’s an attacking player, but without the ball he does a fantastic job helping Alfie (Gilchrist) defend. That is what we need for the future, to build this competitive spirit.”
